Format for Monsieur Kersey’s Enlightenment Salon

Enter the grand room in character

5-10 minutes of quiet, polite socializing. Appropriate topics might include the weather, recent sporting events, or how delicious the hors d’oeuvres are.

Formal discussion begins. Topics will be announced my Monsieur Kersey. The questions for discussion will be chosen from the those listed below:

*How should the government affect the life of the individual? Should government play a major role in the everyday life of a person? Why?

*What is the purpose of government?

*What is the most important right a person possesses? Why?

*Is government a positive good, a necessary evil, or an abomination? Why?

*Should uneducated people be allowed to participate fully in a democracy? Why or why not?

*If a government is oppressive, do the people have the right to revolt and use force to overthrow the government? Why or why not?

*What is more important: religion or science? Why?

Formal discussion will last about 25-30 minutes. Guests should feel free to enjoy the refreshments that have been made available.

You will be assessed according the rubric you have been given. Remember to stay in character and to remain polite at all times. Your grade will depend on how much and how well you participate in the formal discussion.
