Today I attempted to demonstrate taxation without representation to my 8th graders by giving them a letter enumerating a number of new fines and fees that would be implemented at school. The idea was to get the students a bit frustrated, and then discuss their feelings once they knew the letter was a fake. Just in case any of my 8th graders decide to play a joke on Mom or Dad tonight, I want the parents of my students to know that there are no new fines, no new fees, and that the letter you may be given at dinner tonight is a learning tool, and not to be taken seriously.
